Mizpah Cemetery

History

Mizpah Club
In 1926, the Mizpah Club, formerly known as the Sandhill Women, made improving the Cemetery their club project. The Town supplied the water and agreed to match dollar for dollar what the Club could raise to benefit their work at the Cemetery.

Improvements
In 1939 the Works Progress Administration (WPA) fenced the Cemetery and installed the first rock gateway and cement markers to identify individual lots.
The second rock gateway was built and dedicated to the memory of the area servicemen who lost their lives in World War II.
Celebrated Founders
Many celebrated founders of early Weld County are buried here. Those famous or on occasion infamous, settlers include:

  • Rattlesnake Kate, who killed 140 rattlesnakes to create a dress that she wore to celebrations throughout the county
  • The area's first surveyor.
  • Countless service men and their families
  • Early lawyers, bankers, merchants, and physicians
  • Many of Platteville's first families, some of whom have relatives still living in the area

MARSHALL COOK MONUMENT

In May of 2017 the Platteville Historical Society hosted a dedication for the replica of the original monument to Weld County pioneer Marshall Cook. The dedication was held at the Mizpah Cemetery in Platteville after the original sandstone monument to Cook deteriorated over the past several years, the Platteville Historical Society commissioned the granite replica.

Local residents and descendants of Cook also helped fund the replica.

One of the earliest pioneers of Weld County, Cook was justice of the peace, a published writer, a farmer and fathered 10 children. Some of his descendants continue to live in Weld to this day.

The original monument was erected by the Woodmen of the World, a fraternal society. It stood at seven-and-a-half feet tall.  *More information and photos coming soon!
